Mike and Donnie's refined taste for tropical landscaping exceeded their previous contractor's and landscape designer's area of knowledge and experience which is why I was asked to take over the project. Mike and Donnie vacation in Hawaii often and wanted to bring the variation of foliage and trees that are seen in some of Hawaii's most fascinating estates and gardens to their landscape. The challenge: "Bring Hawaii to my home!" After our initial design meeting, I drafted a plan that matched their desire for a Hawaiian landscape with a refined selection of tropical plants including palms, heliconias, bromeliads, cannas, alocasias, colocasias, hibiscus, gingers, bananas, cycads, philodendrons, anthuriums, plumerias, ti plants - and an automated irrigation plan to go with them with sprinklers, misters, micro-sprinklers and drippers. Since their tastes exceeds the selection available at typical nurseries, we dug deep into our inventory and selected various rare tropical plants, palms and trees that bring an exotic flavor to their gardens. We bordered the beds with colorful cyclamens to add a bedazzling display of holiday color. In the spring when the climate warms and the cyclamens fade, a bulb garden will emerge with a wide array of tropical flowers and colors. These photgraphs were taken shortly after pruning the affects of the Santa Ana winds and fires. Enjoy!
